Vine Garden Bed

Vine Garden Bed

Running the length of the Demonstration Garden is the lush and colorful Vine Garden, providing a backdrop to the garden. From exotic-looking Passionflower vines to American wisteria, the vine garden boasts several varieties of Clematis as well as coral Honeysuckle, white and purple Hyacinth bean vine and butterfly Blue Pea vines.

Favorite Plant in this bed:

Passionflower Vine - Passiflora spp.

Gulf Fritillary butterflies sip nectar from the flowers all Spring and Summer, then lay their eggs on the passion flower vines. The tiny Gulf Fritillary caterpillars eat the leaves of the Passionflower until they are large enough to spin their cocoons. Thus, the vines provide for the whole life cycle of these butterflies.
